The Dean Edge 8 has a solid basswood body with a double-cutaway design, providing a lightweight yet resonant foundation suitable for progressive rock, metal, and jazz fusion. The neck is a bolt-on maple/walnut construction, offering stability and comfort for handling the extra strings. The fingerboard is rosewood with 24 frets, featuring a fast and slim contour for easier playability.

The bass features a 34-inch scale length, which is standard for full-range basses and allows precise intonation for both standard and octave strings . The 8-string configuration pairs each standard string with an octave string, producing a rich, harmonic tone that enhances depth and complexity. This setup may require adjustment for players accustomed to 4- or 5-string basses.
