The Dean Edge 8 has a solid basswood body with a double-cutaway design, providing a lightweight yet resonant foundation suitable for progressive rock, metal, and jazz fusion. The neck is a bolt-on maple/walnut construction, offering stability and comfort for handling the extra strings. The fingerboard is rosewood with 24 frets, featuring a fast and slim contour for easier playability.
The bass features a 34-inch scale length, which is standard for full-range basses and allows precise intonation for both standard and octave strings . The 8-string configuration pairs each standard string with an octave string, producing a rich, harmonic tone that enhances depth and complexity. This setup may require adjustment for players accustomed to 4- or 5-string basses.
The Dean Edge 8 is equipped with active soapbar pickups and a 2-band EQ, delivering a clean, articulate, and powerful tone suitable for both live and studio settings. The hardtail bridge allows separate intonation for octave strings, improving tuning. Grover tuners and black hardware complement the instrument’s aesthetics, and the bass is typically available in black with a gloss finish.
