1967 Mercedes-Benz 240/260/280 - Classic American Spec
Mercedes-Benz 230 Fintail (W110), 1967. Rare twin carb car with the four speed floor shift manual.
Most W110 230s you find today are automatics. This one is not, and that is the whole point.
It is one of the scarce examples built with both the twin Zenith carburettors and the four speed manual on a floor mounted shifter. Across the entire 1966 to 1968 run of 40,258 cars, the combination of manual gearbox and twin carbs accounts for fewer than ten percent of them. If you have been waiting for a Heckflosse you can actually row through the gears yourself, this is the car.
Under the bonnet sits the 2.3 litre M180 inline six, fed by the dual Zenith carbs that took output to around 118 horsepower after the 1967 update. It is not about the numbers. It is the way a carburetted six picks up, the weight of a manual change, the directness you simply do not get from the column auto cars. Pure analogue driving, with nothing between you and the road.
The car is a survivor, not a restoration. Left hand drive, USA specification, showing 55,000 miles, which is very low for the age. The original chrome, trim and interior have all been kept and still present beautifully. Those famous Heckflosse tailfins are all there, the styling that defined the early sixties Mercedes and doubled as parking guides at the time.
These six cylinder W110s have been quietly climbing for a while now, and the rare manual twin carb trims are leading the way. This is a car you can show at a Fintail meet or a classic rally, then drive home and enjoy properly.
