Description
ASUS ROG Strix G18 (2024)
https://rog.asus.com/laptops/rog-strix/rog-strix-g18-2024/
SPECIFICATIONS
- CPU: Intel Core i9-14900HX (24 cores / 32 threads)
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU (12 GB GDDR6)
- SSD: Samsung 990 PRO NVMe PCIe Gen4
- RAM: 64 GB Crucial DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM (2 x 32)
CONDITION
Excellent cosmetic condition. The screen is like new.
I used the laptop as a desktop replacement with an external monitor.
UPGRADES ADDED BY ME ONE YEAR AGO (NOT FACTORY-FITTED)
- Samsung 990 PRO SSD: almost impossible to find new; when available, it costs over 900+ AED.
- 64 GB Crucial RAM kit: over 4,000 AED new
These two upgrades alone are worth about 4,900 AED.
WHY I AM SELLING
I am switching to a Spark laptop.
TESTING ON PICKUP
At pickup you can power on the laptop and run any test you like on a test installation of Windows 11. The buyer must do a clean install of Windows 11. The laptop activates Windows 11 Home automatically
(the licence is built into the motherboard).
Please see the photos for more technical details.
Power brick included. No box, no manual.
PRICE: 5,000 AED - FIXED, NO NEGOTIATION.
I will not reply to "final price?" messages.
The price is low for a two-year-old machine with this specification because of a fault that I found late. I am disclosing it because it would be hard for you to notice on your own.
THE ISSUE
One of the processor's 24 cores is faulty: physical performance core 4, which Windows shows as logical processors 8 and 9. When heavy work runs on that core for a very long time, Windows logs hardware errors (WHEA-Logger event 19, "Internal parity error") and the laptop can crash (blue screen
0x101 CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT, or a sudden shutdown).
WHAT IT MEANS IN PRACTICE
The crashes happened only under heavy all-core loads: compiling, stress tests. In everyday use, with
commercial software and games, I have had no problems. Photoshop, Premiere ... and games such as Cyberpunk 2077 run perfectly.
You can avoid the fault completely by keeping that one core out of use. Set the CPU affinity to exclude logical processors 8 and 9 (affinity mask FFFFFCFF), either with the Windows command "start /affinity FFFFFCFF" or with a tool such as Process Lasso. With this setting the laptop has been stable for me, including long
rendering and video encoding jobs and gaming.
PERFORMANCE IMPACT
Leaving one core unused costs very little:
- Games and everyday use: under 2%, not noticeable (games rarely use all 24 cores).
- Software that loads every core at once (video encoding, 3D rendering, compiling): about 4-7%.
These figures are estimates, not benchmarks. One performance core is about 6-7% of the chip's total multi-core power, and the remaining cores
partly make up for it because the laptop's power budget is shared among them. Single-core speed is essentially unchanged, because the other seven performance cores run at full clocks.
