The D-Link DIR-505 “Mobile Companion” is a small portable networking device that works like a mini multi-mode router + Wi-Fi extender + travel hotspot.
It is designed mainly for travel, hotels, and temporary internet setups rather than permanent home use.
What it does (main functions)
The DIR-505 can work in several different modes:
1. Wi-Fi Router Mode
You plug it into a wired internet (Ethernet) source
It creates a Wi-Fi network
Lets multiple devices (phone, laptop, tablet) connect wirelessly
👉 Example: Hotel room has only LAN cable → DIR-505 creates Wi-Fi for your devices
2. Access Point (AP) Mode
Connects to an existing wired network
Broadcasts Wi-Fi from it
Used to “add Wi-Fi” to a wired-only setup
3. Repeater / Range Extender Mode
Connects to an existing Wi-Fi signal
Repeats/boosts it to extend coverage
👉 Example: Weak Wi-Fi in a room → DIR-505 improves signal reach
4. Wi-Fi Hotspot / Bridge Mode
Connects to a network and shares it with multiple devices
Can act as a small network bridge for devices without Wi-Fi
5. USB Sharing (extra feature)
